Surveillance In Society
The prominence of surveillance cameras has grown in many areas of the world. Their purpose is to observe particular areas. Initially, it was done mostly by security people watching a screen as a recording device accumulated video footage of the area. This was a fairly expensive process. But today with automated software available, the expense has been cut and the software allows searches of a database to be made. Many surveillance cameras are set up with motion detectors that record only when there is actual motion. The surveillance cameras are now commonplace in many public areas which can include bus stops, convenience stores, gas stations, fast food restaurants, retail stores and banks. These cameras are also installed next to stop lights on many streets to catch red light running offenders. It appears the surveillance camera is now a part of everyday life. Most people at one point or another have been captured on a surveillance camera.
Expansion Of Surveillance Cameras
The lower expense which has resulted from advanced technology has also enabled the use of home security systems to be a part of many private homes. They are fairly easy to install and are small in size. The purpose of the camera records activity outside the home such as someone coming to the door or, more importantly, it can catch someone who may be trying to break in or committing some sort of vandalism. Most cameras are for the purpose of protecting property on the outside of the home.
Home Surveillance Camera Placement
The placement location of the security camera on the outside of the home is probably the most important decision to be made. The camera should have good focus and visual coverage and it should be attached securely so that there is no shaking to distort the picture. An outside camera should also have a weatherproof casing.
Selecting Wireless Or Wired
The camera can be either wireless or wired. The wireless will be easier to keep inconspicuous since there are no hookup wires. However, the quality of the picture is normally better on wired units. Wireless units may be intercepted if they are not encrypted.
Recording Surveillance Videos
Another important decision is whether the surveillance needs to be recorded. If there is a need to record over a period of time, the system should be connected to a recording device. Utilizing a VCR to keep the recording is used by some people and it can be easily deleted if there was no cause for concern. Other people have the system hooked up to their computer especially if they want to keep their surveillance recordings digitally for a longer time period.
The decision for a home video surveillance system is predicated on whether or not one lives in an area where problems of security are evident. Unfortunately, for most of us security is a concern.
